Chris Sykes, of brokerage MSP Financial Solutions, said a buyer on this salary could potentially afford a £480,000 house – meaning they could buy in several locations from Fulham to Finsbury Park.

Mr Sykes said he could get one of his current clients – a single first-time buyer earning £68,000 – a mortgage of £408,000. “This means she can definitely buy a flat in London,” he added.
